Yesterday was my dear coworker/friend's birthday. A group of us from work (all people I actually like to hang out with even outside of work) went to a restaurant for lunch. I decided to break the ice by asking if everyone if they seen the "Stuff DC people say" video. I started laughing about the part about the mambo sauce and looked up to see 5 blank looks. "We didn't get that part", one girl explained, "What is mambo sauce?"*
Oh yea, I can't think of any Dupont Circle or above restaurants that might have it. "How about Yum's Carryout?" Oh, you've never been. I awkwardly begin eating to fill the silence. I don't fit in. Never have.
"Have you ever been to NE? Not even H street? Oh, you don't have a car? Oh, every where I go you need a car to get to. I live in Virginia. No, it's not far."
Rewind to the weekend, I am having happy hour with some people that I met in Dupont Circle. Everything they were talking about was out of my price range. Girl turns to me, "Would you rather have an Infiniti or a Benz?" I turn back and say, "Are those cars?"*(I know that they are vaguely, but don't try to get me to point them out)
That is why I started this blog. For those of you who have thoughts like mine, and feel like you are the only one sometimes. I'm with you. I'm awkward and Black, and if you have ever read one of my posts and said "I was just thinking that! or She's right!" then this is all worth the time I put into it.
*Ps for you non-DC folks, mambo sauce (pronounced mumbo sauce and sometimes spelled that way) is a sweet and sour sauce with some bbq, only Lord knows what else. Most people love to dip anything and everything in it (fries, chicken, chinese food) and when ever we would order out, someone would inevitable yell ask them if they have mambo sauce!
Hahaha. To be fair - I never know anything and I've never been anywhere. As far as places/bars/restaurants in DC are concerned. :)
