Day 352: The definition of friendship

Have you ever seen the movie The Color of Friendship? It was created by the Disney Movie Channel around 2000 about a South African girl comes to the United States to live with an American family. By accepting generalizations they assume the South African girl is Black and the American girl is white. In reality, the South African girl was white and the American was black. They have to challenge their stereotypes to be together and develop a friendship. This post has NOTHING to do with that. I just really like that movie.

Recently, I've been thinking about friendship and how different people have different definitions of it. For example, what I would consider a friend is much higher than what my sister thinks and much different than what my own friends may think. To me friendship is something that goes both ways, a person you can always hang out with for hours on end, not necessarily doing anything, someone you can call when your car breaks down. I have a bit of an extra personality, so in college I had around 7 very close friends. When one would tire of me, I would have 6 other people I could hang out with!  A true friendship is one where you can go through everything together, even fights and arguments, and still stay friends. (Even if you have to take a break for a few years). It seems to me that making friends get harder and harder as you become an adult. So take the time to make sure that you and your new friend have similar definitions of friendship before diving right in. It can hurt when someone thinks that you are best friends and the other person doesn't. Also know that friendship takes time and similar characteristics, just like the Color of Friendship.

My definition of a good friend: when having an argument with a friend you think about choking him/her like you would your brother or sister, but never think about ending the friendship.
My definition of a lifelong friend: someone who I have gone through rough times with and we both survived and had a great story to tell.
